SEPT. 2024: Training in Facilitation of public Dialogue

Applications for the next training in Facilitation of Public Dialogue are now open. We hope to welcome you to Lillehammer from 23rd to 27th of September.

APPLY HERE

A public dialogue is a facilitated dialogue for the public about a topic of public interest. This form of dialogue can be open gatherings for anyone who wants to attend, or closed dialogue meetings for invited parts of a community or group. This approach is particularly useful for addressing sensitive, conflicted, or controversial topics. In a public dialogue, participants have space to share their personal stories and thoughts, and perhaps build trust and better understanding across differences.

Learning outcomes

This training emphasizes insights and practical knowledge about the public dialogue approach as well as how to facilitate such dialogues. Facilitation is about creating safe space so that the participants in a dialogue can share openly and honestly. During this training, participants will practice the tools a facilitator has to their disposal to create this atmosphere.

In addition, you will learn about the various steps of how to plan and organize public dialogues. Together, this training will give you all that you need to facilitate inclusive conversations on various topics.

*Some experience in dialogue work or previous participation in the introductory course “Dialogue in Conflict” is an advantage, but not a requirement to participate.

SØK HER

TRAINING CONTENT

This training is a composition of the topics concerning facilitation as a method of dialogue processes and conflict transformation. It is a five-day process-oriented course and consists of different aspects of the role of the facilitator. You get to practice the role in roleplays and reflect upon various challenges a facilitator has to navigate.

The main components of the program are:

Interactive recap of the concept of dialogue

A short recap of definitions of dialogue and the two most important elements in dialogue, active listening and asking questions, through interactive exercises.

Reflective activities on dialogue facilitation

What is dialogue facilitation, and how does this approach differ from mediation, moderation or leading a discussion or debate.

The role of the facilitator

Brainstorm around the role of the dialogue facilitator and its main characteristics. Elaborate the importance of multipartiality in facilitation and how to maintain this approach throughout the dialogue.

Practicing dialogue facilitation

Participants will get insight in the difference between conflict based and public dialogues and practice facilitation through role plays based on conflict situations or topics presented by the trainers. They will receive comprehensive feedback based on observation from both the trainers and other participants, which will help them understand the role and its implications.

Challenges in dialogue facilitation

Participants will reflect around different challenges related to the role of the facilitator; navigating power imbalances, outbreaks of strong emotions, or spoilers of the dialogue and how to be an authority without becoming authoritarian.

Dialogue as tool for reconciliation

To reconcile is challenging process, but possible. In an interactive process participants will explore the concept of reconciliation and what role  dialogue can play in this process.

Planning a dialogue process

The participants will gain insight in the differences between a dialogue session and a dialogue process. Knowing when to use dialogue and what its limits are will be discussed. Participants will learn about different steps in the process and techniques to motivate people to stay active throughout. In addition to conflict transformation processes, the training will cover how to plan and execute public dialogues.

TRAINING CONTENT

This training is an introductory program and is a composition of topics relevant for applying dialogue as an approach to transform conflicts including tools for communication and conflict analysis. It is a five-day process-oriented course and consists of interactive exercises where the participants bring in their experience from various fields.

The main components in the program are:

Identity

Exercises for learning to know oneself and others and building group trust. Focus on the importance of identity in communication and as an entry point to a dialogical approach.

Introduction to the concept of dialogue

Introduction to the NCPD approach to dialogue as a method and platform for change. Further exploration of the concept through exercises where participants are challenged to reflect upon different aspects of a meaningful dialogue process.

Deep listening and the art of asking questions

Introduction to the most fundamental tools in dialogue: deep listening and asking dialogical questions. Through interactive exercises the participants will experience and practice these tools and reflect on how to improve in these important skills.

Tools for conflict analysis

Conflict analysis is the basis for creating a transformative dialogue process. Participants will use examples of conflicts from their own life experiences in practicing and executing the three stages of analysis:

  1. Mapping of the actors, their relationships and how they influence each other. External and internal factors that are directly or indirectly linked are included in the analysis.
  2. Analysis of the root causes and the main problem of the conflict.
  3. The actors’ position, interest and needs.

Dialogue as a tool in conflict transformation

Introduction and reflection about the role of dialogue in a conflict transformation process. This part of the program gives participants insight into conflict transformation theory and how dialogue is embedded in this approach.

Basic understanding of the role of the facilitator

Short introduction to the role of the facilitator. More comprehensive knowledge and practice concerning this role is the subject of our advanced training in Dialogue Facilitation.

Planning a dialogue process

Participants practice the steps and stages of planning a dialogue process based on the conflicts from their group work.

Please note: Since the methodology in the course is process-based, all participants must be present throughout all sessions. Home assignments can be given between the training days

Stay tuned: NCPD´s advanced training in Dialogue Facilitation for 2022 will be held in Lillehammer between 20th – 24th of June. Participation in “Dialogue in Conflict” enables you to apply for this advanced training. Applications will open and be announced on our website soon!
